Boca Raton is located in Palm Beach County, Florida. While the U.S Census reports the population at about 200,000 there are nearly 350,000 people in Boca Raton each day enjoying all the city has to offer. In 1904, Japanese farmers of the Yamato Colony used the land west of the city as pineapple plantations. During WWII however, most of their land was seized to be used as the site of the Boca Raton Air Force Base which became a major facility for training B-29 bomber crews. Today much of the land belongs to Florida Atlantic University, while part of the former airbase currently serves as the Boca Raton Airport.
By the late 1960’s, the International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) made public their intentions to build a manufacturing plant in Boca Raton. IBM purchased hundreds of acres of real estate just northwest of the Florida Atlantic University. The real estate IBM had developed in Boca Raton was used by the company continuously until 1996. After being sold several times the real estate finally became the property of T-Rex Management Consortium. T-REX in turn has revived the facility and the surrounding real estate by using the space to create an extremely successful business/research park.
By the 1980s with the opening of the Town Center at Boca Raton in the western part of the city, the historical city center in eastern Boca Raton including The Old Boca Raton Mall and downtown corridor were beginning to decay with a trend of vacancy and occupancy by marginal tenants. The Real estate comprising of the once dreary Old Boca Raton Mall was revitalized in 1991 and is now known as Mizner Park and has become a cultural center for Southern Palm Beach County. The landscape of Mizner Park was designed to resemble a Mediterranean suburban town center with a modern look. The Boca Raton Museum of Art relocated to Mizner Park in 2001 and in 2002 this area of Boca Raton’s downtown became the home of the Mizner Park Amphitheater, providing a large outdoor venue for concerts and other performances.
Today The Town Center at Boca Raton is the largest upscale shopping center in Palm Beach County. Anchor stores include Bloomingdales, Neiman Marcus, Sacks Fifth Avenue and an experimental restaurant owned by the Cheesecake Factory called Grand Lux Café, which features a broad choice of international cuisine.
Boca Raton has a strict development code which restricts the size and types of commercial buildings, building signs, and advertisements allowed within the city limits. Specifically, there are no car dealerships located within the city limits, no billboards are present, and even corporations such as McDonalds have had to scale back their iconic Golden Arches insignia to be in line with city code.
