While the Orange Grove House of Refuge was constructed in1876 to provide a safe haven for shipwrecked sailors it is believed that settlement in Delray begun sometime in 1884 when farmers from the Panhandle of Florida began purchasing the land near the Orange Grove House of Refuge and later in 1894 established the first school in the area. By 1910 Delray had a population of 250, and in 1911 the area was incorporated as an official town. In this same year pineapple and tomato cannery plants were constructed. By the 1920’s environmental and technological changes along with the Florida land boom of the 1920’s drove the citizens of Delray away from farming as the main source of economic stability to tourism and real estate development.

 Delray Beach has gone through immense renovation since WWII and is now characterized by posh restraints and upscale boutiques. One of the major driving forces in the current revitalization has been the business and attention brought to Delray Beach by the Delray Beach tennis Center which has hosted several major international tennis events including the Fed Cup in 2005, the Davis Cup in 2004, and the Chris Everet/Bank of America match. As a result of the elevated interest in the area other landmarks have become relevant once more, for instance the Old School Square, formerly Delray Elementary School 1913 is now home of the Cornell Museum of Art & American Culture, as well as the Crest Theatre which, today is being used as a venue for the performing arts.

Delray Beach prides itself in its cultural heritage and celebrates its history throughout the year with festivals such as The Delray Affair which is a three day street fair held in the Downtown Delray Arts District, the Delray Beach Garlic Fest which is another three day music, food, and art festival held at the Old School Square during the second weekend of February, and even a Gallery Walk which is held every Friday night and gives residents an opportunity to stroll downtown and view the art galleries, studios and showrooms along Atlantic Avenue.

Real estate development as well as design since 2003 in Delray has been steadily changing as well. Since the early 2000s architects and engineers have been using the foundations of mixed-use development.
